The Vince Wilding Memorial RunEleven members brought their Capris to Exeter for the Vince Wilding Memorial Run. They were joined by two visitors, Nigel from Exeter and Simon from Torbay Capri Club, both with Brooklands 280’s. Together with Barrie’s we had more of this rare marque than Lasers! Three participants cars had been MOT’d between Thursday and Saturday, luckily all passed and were Taxed in time, Paul’s at 12.01 on Saturday! David’s Mk1 over-heated before it got to Exeter, and limped in with Paul as escort. Water was topped up, hasty repairs to a split hose and throwing caution to the wind he joined us as we formed up for the run. Sue led the convoy off at exactly 12.30, a number of visitors to the services stood in amazement as the cars passed by and those entering the parking are kindly gave way to allow us to exit en-bloc. The A30 was fairly clear and the weather was fine. The faces of other drivers who passed us on the road had to be seen to be believed, after all it's unusual to overtake one Capri, but a whole convoy...! Half an hour later we were parading through Honiton. We were greeted by cheers and clapping from spectators. Arriving at the Star Inn we found that the locals had been busy and had cleared the car park for us, except for Vince’s spare Capri, which could not be moved. (This has since been collected by Andy, and so may live on if it proves to be salvagable, if not, parts gleaned will help to extend the life of others). The BBQ soon came to life and a raffle was held, a barrel of John Smiths had been donated and at just £1 a pint soon took a hammering from the non-drivers present. Vince’s 80-year-old father turned up to see the cars, having travelled down especially from Lincoln, much to his girlfriend’s annoyance!!! The sun continued to shine, and before we left more running repairs were made to Dave’s Capri using parts gleaned from the spare Capri. All the proceeds went into the charity fund and the total raised towards Cancer Research with this event was £410 (including £10 donated by Dorset Capri Club following a whip round of members at their monthly meeting. Duchy have also said that they will be doing similar and so the total is set to climb even further. A huge thank you goes to all those who took part and gave so very generously. We look forward to seeing Sue at a few of our events later this year, when they don't coincide with her other love, Pigeon racing! |
