Heaters are a pain!!! Would you believe it was an award-winning design in its day! The bushes tend to run dry, causing the motor to sieze, over-heat and burn out the plastic carbon brush-holders. Nearly all the heaters I get suffer from this problem, and I tend to have to strip about four old ones to make one good one. One of our club members, Mark has discovered a novel repair. He uses a Fiesta or MGBGT electric fan motor, fits the Capri fan onto the shaft, welds three nuts onto its casing, then strips out the Capri motor, and cuts back the plastic mountings flush with the case. He then drills the case and inserts three correct length bolts through into the welded nuts on the new motor, tightening them so that the motor is central to the casing and the nut-heads have counter-sunk themselves flush into the plastic outside. The coil resistor on the Capri heater is nearly always corroded and useless so bypassing it will give you full blow on both settings! The metal fixings on front indicator units are nearly always beyond redemption. An easy fix is to cut a straight two inch length of radiator hose and compress this in behind the unit and the top of the valance. This has enough spring in it to hold the indicator in position, but enables it to be very easily removed when needed. It certainly beats having to re drill holes and muck about with screws you can't reach!!! |
